Press Showing of the exhibition “Innovation as an Artistic Technique”

On 24 May 2018 there was a special press showing of the exhibition “Innovation as an Artistic Technique” in the Upper Gallery in the Manege of the Small Hermitage. The event, organized within the Hermitage 20/21 project, is a part of the cultural programme for the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum.

The exhibition tells about innovative technologies and their interaction with contemporary art. It presents projects by artists who work with technological art, the Art & Science format, artificial intelligence, generative art and other current practices.

“On the one hand, this is an unusual exhibition, on the other it fits into our Hermitage ‘salvo’. The Hermitage is an encyclopaedic museum and so we have completely different exhibitions opening at the same time: Arte Povera, the Kabakovs’ exhibition, Mihály Munkácsy’s paintings… Following our concept, ultra-new art is being shown alongside an archaeological exhibition devoted to the Lombards. Today we are presenting entirely contemporary art that is hard to describe, even harder than describing traditional art,” Mikhail Piotrovsky, General Director of the State Hermitage, said.

The exhibition was presented to the journalists by its curators: Victoria Kondrashova, CEO of the company RDI.Creative, and Dmitry Ozerkov, head of the State Hermitage’s Department of Contemporary Art. Artists whose works are included in the display were also present for the press showing.

The exhibition “Innovation as an Artistic Technique” has been organized by the State Hermitage and RDI.Creative with the support of the VEB Innovation Foundation. The creative partner of the exhibition is Vnesheconombank.

The exhibition is open to visitors from 25 May to 3 June.
